What Are Real-World Assets (RWA)? Types, Examples, and Risks
If you follow crypto news, you have almost certainly come across the term RWA. Global asset managers and banks are launching funds as tokens, crypto exchanges are selling US shares as tokens, and Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK) is preparing dedicated rules for tokenized assets. All three stories are about the same thing. Real-world assets (RWA) are assets whose value comes from outside the blockchain, such as government bonds, gold, shares, loans, or property, with the rights to them recorded as tokens on a blockchain.
The article What Is Tokenization? How Real Assets Move Onchain covered the process. This article covers the assets: how big the RWA market is today, what types exist, whether stablecoins count, and how to assess an RWA token before you trust it.

What are real-world assets (RWA)?
RWA are real-world assets represented on a blockchain. The data platform RWA.xyz defines tokenized assets as tokens on a blockchain that represent off-chain assets, such as financial instruments, commodities, and fiat currencies. The crypto industry uses the term RWA mainly to separate these assets from native crypto assets like Bitcoin, whose value comes from market demand and the network itself.
In everyday use, “RWA” refers to two things: the asset (gold, bonds, a building) and the token. In this article, “RWA” means the real-world asset, and “RWA token” means the token that represents it.
Think of an RWA token as a locker key. You hold the key and can hand it to someone else, but its value lies in what is inside the locker. The key is only useful as long as two conditions hold: the locker really has something in it, and the locker operator will open it when you show up. With an RWA token, the contents of the locker are the asset, and the operator is the issuer and the custodian. So assessing an RWA token always means assessing two things: the asset, and the parties looking after it.
How big is the RWA market?
RWA market figures are usually presented in two groups. Since November 2025, RWA.xyz has split tokenized assets into:
- Distributed assets. Tokens that can be moved to wallets outside the issuing platform and transferred between wallets, including tokens that only verified (whitelisted) wallets may hold. Here the blockchain acts as a distribution channel to investors.
- Represented assets. Tokens that cannot be moved outside the issuing platform or transferred between wallets. Here the blockchain mainly serves as a record-keeping and reconciliation system for financial institutions.
The largest represented asset is the Figure HELOC Token, home equity loans recorded on the Provenance blockchain and worth around US$23.8 billion. According to RWA.xyz, Figure runs these tokenized loans inside its own lending marketplace, so the tokens do not circulate freely to investors.
As of 14 October 2026, RWA.xyz puts the value of distributed RWA at around US$39.11 billion, held by around 5.23 million holders. Represented value is far larger, at around US$357.69 billion. Because represented tokens do not circulate to on-chain investors, that figure says more about how much institutions use blockchains for record-keeping than about how much is accessible to investors. For you as a user, the distributed figure is the more relevant one.
| Asset class | Distributed value | Represented value | Holders |
|---|---|---|---|
| US government debt and money market funds | US$14.91 billion | US$89.27 million | ~86,000 |
| Credit | US$8.08 billion | US$37.71 billion | ~199,000 |
| Commodities | US$5.24 billion | US$3.23 billion | ~450,000 |
| Stocks and ETFs | US$3.28 billion | US$24.60 million | ~4.38 million |
| Real estate | US$226.56 million | US$1.34 billion | ~19,000 |

A few patterns stand out:
- The most value sits in the most “boring” assets. US government debt and money market funds account for around 38% of distributed RWA value.
- Tokenized stocks have the most holders. Their value is far below government debt, but they have many times more holders than any other class.
- Real estate is still very small. Property is the most common example used to explain tokenization, yet its distributed value is under 1% of the total.
By network, Ethereum holds the most distributed RWA, around US$17.0 billion, followed by BNB Chain at around US$5.8 billion and Solana at around US$4.4 billion. These figures change daily and follow one platform’s methodology. Other data platforms may show different numbers, so check the original source before quoting them.
Types of RWA and how they differ
RWA.xyz groups tokenized assets into several classes, including US Treasury funds, non-US government debt, credit, stocks, private equity and venture capital, active strategies, commodities, and real estate. The five classes below come up most often, and they behave quite differently.
1. Government debt and money market funds
Most products in this class are funds or notes in token form that invest in short-term US government debt. Their value comes from interest, so returns follow short-term US interest rates.
One example is Ondo U.S. Dollar Yield (USDY). USDY is a tokenized note issued by Ondo USDY LLC and secured by short-term US Treasuries and bank deposits. The assets are held by a collateral agent, and the product is only for investors outside the US. Its price is not pegged at US$1, because interest accrues into the value of the token.
Compare USDY with BlackRock’s BUIDL, covered in the tokenization article. Both rest on US government debt, but their legal form differs. BUIDL holders hold fund shares, while USDY holders hold a debt claim against the issuing entity. Similar underlying assets do not always come with the same rights.
This class has relatively few holders, around 86,000. That fits with how many of its products are open only to institutions or to investors who meet certain qualifications.
2. Credit and loans
RWA.xyz puts all non-sovereign debt in the credit class: private credit, on-chain lending, corporate bonds, and structured credit. Value comes from the interest borrowers pay.
One example is Maple’s syrupUSDC, worth around US$1 billion. Users deposit USDC and receive syrupUSDC, a token representing their share of a pool of loans to institutional borrowers. According to Maple’s documentation, the loans are fixed-rate and overcollateralized, and borrowers must pass KYC/AML checks and a credit underwriting process. The same documentation states that no third party guarantees the performance of the loans.
In this class, yield always comes with default risk. Collateral worth more than the loan reduces that risk, but does not remove it.
3. Commodities, mostly gold
More than 90% of distributed commodity value comes from two gold tokens: Tether Gold (XAUT) at around US$3.02 billion and PAX Gold (PAXG) at around US$1.82 billion.
Each XAUT token represents one fine troy ounce of gold, about 31.1 grams, from a London Good Delivery bar held in Switzerland. The issuer is TG Commodities, part of the El Salvador-based Tether group. The attestation as of 30 June 2026 reported reserves of around 707,747 troy ounces, or roughly 22 tonnes of gold.
A gold token can be split into very small units, but its redemption for physical gold cannot. Direct redemption with the issuer requires identity verification and happens in whole bars, each weighing around 400 troy ounces. In practice, small holders can only exit by selling their tokens on the market.
4. Stocks and ETFs
By number of holders, tokenized stocks reach more people than any other type of RWA, even though their value is far below government debt.
The best-known example is xStocks from Backed Finance, a company Kraken agreed to acquire in December 2025. Each xStock is backed 1:1 by the underlying share or ETF. Legally, xStocks are tracker certificates issued by Backed Assets (JE) Limited, not shares. Bybit’s xStocks FAQ says the product gives economic exposure to the share price but does not give voting rights, dividend entitlements, or legal claims to the underlying shares or company assets. Dividends are not paid out as cash to token holders either. The product is not offered to US investors.
So a token backed 1:1 by shares does not necessarily make you a shareholder. Your rights are set by the product’s legal documents.
5. Real estate
Property is the most common example used to explain tokenization, yet it is one of the smallest classes. RWA.xyz tracks 104 real estate assets, with more represented value than distributed value.
Property has a few traits that make it harder to tokenize. Rights to land and buildings are recorded with each country’s land registry, not on a blockchain. Its value is only known through periodic appraisals. Buyers are also limited, so property tokens tend to be hard to sell quickly. A small slice of a building is more affordable, but not necessarily easy to cash out.
Summary of RWA types
| RWA type | Example tokens | Source of value | Typical access | Typical risks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Government debt and money market funds | USDY, BUIDL | Interest on short-term government debt | Often limited to institutions or verified non-US investors | Issuer risk, interest rate changes, investor eligibility rules |
| Credit | syrupUSDC | Loan interest | Varies; borrowers must pass KYC | Borrower default |
| Commodities | XAUT, PAXG | Gold price | Traded on crypto exchanges; direct redemption requires verification | Custodian, physical redemption only in large units |
| Stocks and ETFs | xStocks | Share price | Non-US investors in permitted countries | No shareholder rights, dependence on the issuer |
| Real estate | Property tokens | Rent and property value | Varies by platform | Low liquidity, valuation, validity of title |
Are stablecoins RWA?
It depends on the definition. Conceptually, fiat-backed stablecoins fit the RWA definition. Their value comes from money and liquid assets held as reserves off-chain, and the token represents a claim on that value. RWA.xyz’s own definition of tokenized assets lists fiat currencies as one example.
In its data, though, RWA.xyz keeps stablecoins separate from other RWA. As of 14 October 2026, stablecoins on the platform are worth around US$292.93 billion, roughly seven and a half times the value of all distributed RWA. Combining the two would bury the other asset classes and make trends harder to read.
Not every stablecoin fits the definition either. Crypto-backed stablecoins are backed by crypto assets held on the blockchain, while algorithmic stablecoins hold their value through code-based mechanisms. Neither rests on a real-world asset. The difference between the three is covered in Types of Stablecoins: Fiat-Backed, Crypto-Backed, and Algorithmic.
Legally, stablecoins in Indonesia are generally classed as crypto assets, so they may be treated differently from tokenized assets even though the two are similar in concept.
Where does IDRX fit in the RWA map?
The examples in this article can be mapped onto two sides. The first side is assets bought to hold: government debt, loans, gold, shares, and property. The second side is the means of paying for and receiving those assets on a blockchain. IDRX sits on the second side.
IDRX is a fiat-backed stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the Rupiah and backed by fiat reserves and government securities. Its transparency and audit documents are available on the IDRX documents page. Because its value is pegged to the Rupiah, it works more like cash in token form than like an investment asset such as a bond token or a gold token. In RWA.xyz data, products like it fall under stablecoins, not total RWA.
When Rupiah-denominated assets trade on a blockchain, such as the gold tokens or government bond (Surat Utang Negara) tokens being tested in OJK’s sandbox, those transactions need Rupiah in token form on the same network. That is where a Rupiah stablecoin could play a role. Using a stablecoin as a means of transaction (alat transaksi) in Indonesia remains subject to OJK rules, and such use is not treated as a means of payment (alat pembayaran). How to assess an RWA token
The tokenization article already gave a general list of questions to ask before buying a token that claims to represent a real asset. This section adds three core questions and the points to check for each type of RWA.
Three core questions
- What do you actually hold? The examples above show the form can vary: fund shares (BUIDL), a debt claim against the issuer (USDY), a share of a loan pool (syrupUSDC), a right to physical gold held by a custodian (XAUT), or a tracker certificate (xStocks). The legal form determines what you can claim if something goes wrong.
- Can the token be moved and sold? Check whether the token is distributed or represented, whether only verified wallets may hold it, and how active its secondary market is. Also check who may redeem directly with the issuer, and the minimum amount.
- Who confirms the asset really exists? Look for the custodian’s name and reports from an independent party. Know the difference between an attestation and an audit. An attestation checks that assets exist on a single date. It is not a full audit of the issuer’s financial statements. Reports published on a regular schedule mean more than one old report.
What to check for each type of RWA
- Government debt and money market funds: who the fund manager is, how net asset value (NAV) is calculated, who qualifies as an investor, and how long redemption takes.
- Credit: who the borrowers are, what the collateral is, who absorbs losses first if there is a default, and what the default track record looks like.
- Commodities: how often attestations are published, whether bar serial numbers can be checked, and the minimum for physical redemption.
- Stocks and ETFs: whether the token gives voting rights and dividends, what its legal form is, and how its price moves when the underlying stock exchange is closed.
- Real estate: what documents prove the property rights, who appraises the property and how often, who manages rental income, and how you exit if there are no buyers.
For readers in Indonesia, a label saying “available to non-US investors” does not mean a product may be offered in Indonesia. Under POJK 27/2024 as amended by POJK 23/2025, digital financial assets may only be traded through OJK-licensed providers and must be on the list set by the exchange. A similar assessment framework for stablecoins is in Stablecoin Risks and How to Assess Them.
RWA in Indonesia
Dedicated rules for offering tokenized assets in Indonesia are still being drafted. OJK’s draft regulation on offerings of digital financial assets defines a tokenized asset as a digital financial asset that represents an asset in digital form through tokenization.
In early October 2026, Adi Budiarso, who heads OJK’s supervision of financial sector technology innovation, digital financial assets, and crypto assets, said the draft rules on offering tokenized assets were still in progress. He said the rules for real asset tokenization, Rupiah stablecoins, digital asset custodians, and crypto fund management are expected to be finished by the end of 2026 or in early 2027.
While those rules are pending, OJK has been testing several tokenization models in its regulatory sandbox, including gold tokenization, tokenization of government bonds (Surat Utang Negara) through fund management contracts, and tokenization of property ownership benefits. The regulatory layers, from Law Number 4 of 2026 to the OJK regulations already in force, are covered in the regulation section of the tokenization article. Because the rules are still changing, check this information against OJK’s latest official sources.
Conclusion
Real-world assets are real assets, such as government debt, loans, gold, shares, and property, whose rights are recorded as tokens on a blockchain. The market is up and running, but uneven. As of mid-October 2026, the value of RWA circulating to on-chain investors is around US$39 billion. Government debt is the largest class, tokenized stocks have the most holders, and real estate is still very small.
Two tokens that both claim 1:1 backing can come with very different rights: fund shares, a debt claim, a share of a loan pool, or plain price exposure with no shareholder rights. Before you trust an RWA token, make sure you know what you hold, how you can exit, and who confirms the asset really exists.
In Indonesia, OJK is preparing dedicated rules for tokenized assets. The next article in this series looks at why RWA tokenization matters for Indonesia’s economy.
FAQ
What are RWA in short? RWA (real-world assets) are assets whose value comes from outside the blockchain, such as government debt, gold, shares, loans, or property, with the rights to them recorded as tokens on a blockchain.
What is the difference between RWA and tokenization? Tokenization is the process, and RWA are the real-world assets that become the subject of that process.
Which type of RWA is the largest today? According to RWA.xyz data as of October 2026, US government debt and money market funds are the largest class, at around 38% of distributed RWA value. By number of holders, tokenized stocks lead.
Are stablecoins RWA? Conceptually, fiat-backed stablecoins can be seen as RWA because they represent money held as reserves. However, data platforms such as RWA.xyz track stablecoins separately from other RWA. Crypto-backed and algorithmic stablecoins do not count, because they do not rest on real-world assets.
Is holding a stock token the same as owning the stock? Not necessarily. xStocks, for example, are legally tracker certificates. They give exposure to the share price, but no voting rights, dividend entitlements, or legal claim to the company’s shares.
What are distributed and represented assets? Distributed assets are RWA tokens that can be moved to wallets outside the issuing platform and transferred between wallets. Represented assets cannot be moved or transferred that way, so the blockchain mainly serves as a record-keeping tool.
Can RWA tokens be bought in Indonesia? In Indonesia, digital financial assets may only be traded through OJK-licensed providers and must be on the list set by the exchange. OJK is still drafting dedicated rules for offering tokenized assets, so check the provider’s licensing status on OJK’s official website before you transact.
